"Know the Rules to the Game
A Community Workshop on how to Teach Legal Rights"
The purpose of this workshop is to provide attendees with a model of how to teach members of our community about their legal rights and laws that impact their daily lives. Attendees will be better able to provide information and strategies that will assist community members in effectively exercising their constitutional rights, and reducing the likelihood of their becoming embroiled in the criminal justice system. As our constitutional rights continue to erode as a result of court decisions that expand police power and the establishment of more invasive law enforcement procedures, we must be even more diligent in knowing, understanding, appreciating, and asserting our constitutional rights. Additionally, too many of our young people learn about the consequences of certain laws after they have broken them, and face incarceration, probation, or other collateral consequences of an arrest and/or a conviction. Topics that will be discussed include: Police Search Seizures, Mandatory Minimums, Domestic Violence, License Suspensions, Juvenile Law, and Two/Four Strikes Laws.
Am I Suited to Become a Mentor?
A Community Workshop on Initiating Mentoring
The purpose of this workshop is to establish mentoring as a bonding and trusting relationship between an older adult and a young person, which is long-term in nature. Mentors serve as constant guideposts and as a form of stability in the lives of young people. However, this workshop will distinguish the differences between a role model, a volunteer and a mentor. The most major difference is the level of commitment made between a mentor and mentee. We will also examine both good and not-so-good role models in the African American community. These items will be addressed, in addition to involving local non-profits and churches, i.e. Rites of Passage programs, in a discussion regarding mentoring. Attendees will also have an opportunity to talk about their mentoring experiences (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and the larger group will be able to provide input/feedback.&nibs; Attendees will feel more empowered and imbued with the necessary skills to mentor as a result of this workshop. They, too, will be able to train others in becoming effective mentors.Parent University 101:

The workshop is for any person of African descent that has done or is interested in doing anything of positive significance with and for African people. Such action rings us face-to-face with oppression and internalized oppression. Unfortunately, no school, university or job has taught us how to navigate, combat, and heal oppression or internalized oppression. That is why Healing Oppression's Wounds (HOW) is so needed. A goal is for us to know our and our people's wounded-ness and to practice and develop African-Centered skills to facilitate healthy challenging and healing The workshop is designed to be experiential and very interactive. We work to make it a safe place to do deep work and skill building. The implication is that if we don't identify the respective wounds and get busy healing them, we will pass them onto our children. The participants of the workshop are always motivated to engage their healing energies to ensure that their children have the best chances to be spared these generational wounds of oppression.
